배경:
제8회 세종 작문경연대회 수필 부문에서 이문열 작가의 “우리의 일그러진 영웅” 영문 번역판 (“Our Twisted Hero”) 전문을 세종 웹사이트에 읽고 미국의 고등학생들과 대학생들이 수필을 쓰도록 하여, 미국의 여러 고등학교 영어 교사들이 이 소설을 수업시간에 사용하고 많은 학생들이 이문열 작가의 문학 세계에 접할 기회를 가졌습니다. 학생들은 “Our Twisted Hero”를 George Orwell의 ‘Animal Farm’이나 ”1984”, Shakespeare의 ‘Julius Caesar’, 또는 Ayn Rand의 “The Fountainhead” 등의 소설들과 러시아 혁명 (Bolshevik Revolution, Red October Revolution) 등의 역사적 사건들과 비교하기도 하며 권력에 대한 인간의 본성, 사회 지도층의 권력과, 권력의 필요성과 그로 인한 부패 등, 또 지도자 역량등에 대한 분석을 심층깊게 다루는 수필 들을 제출하였습니다. 이를 계기로 세종문화회는 훌륭한 한국 문학들이 미국 사회에 더욱 알려 지기를 바라며 한국문학 번역원 (Literature Translation Institute of Korea, Seoul Korea) 의 특별 후원을 받아 이문열 작가를 시카고에 초청하여 다음과 같은 행사를 갖기에 알려드립니다.
행사 일정:
- 3월 7일 – Lake Forest Academy 를 방문 - “Our Twisted Hero” ( 우리의 일그러진 영웅) 소설을 수업시간에 사용한 세 학급의 수업시간에 초청되어 강연과 미국 학생들과의 간담회를 갖습니다.
- 3월 8일 (1시 – 4시) Urbana, IL – Global 시대의 한국 문학이라는 주제로 이문열 작가외에 Columbia 대학에서 한국 문학을 가르치는 Theodore Hughes 교수와 많은 세계의 소설들의 번역 출판을 하고 있는 비영리 출판사 Darkey Archive Press의 John O’Brien디럭터을 모시고 박원정 PD의 사회로 심포지움을 어바나에 있는 일리노이 주립대학 (UIUC)에서 갖고 심포지움이 끝나면 Book Signing을 합니다. 이 심포지움을 위해 UIUC Asian Study Group의 Nancy Ablemann 교수와 UIUC 한인학생회가 적극 후원해 주셨습니다. 영어로 진행되며 아무나 참석할 수 있으며 입장은 무료입니다.
- 3월9일 (오후 7시 30분 부터) – 시카고 교민들을 위해 윈담 글랜뷰 호텔에서 이문열 문학 콘서트라는 제목으로 한국 최고 작가의 삶과 작품세계에 대한 이야기를 나누는 시간을 갖습니다. 박원정 PD가 MC을 맡고, 아무나 참석할 수 있으며 입장은 무료입니다.
- 3월 10일 (오후 1시 30분) , 우래옥 – 이문열 작가를 모시로 환영 만찬회를 우래옥 (3201 W. Algonquin Rd, Rolling Meadows) 에서 갖습니다. 회비는 $50불 이며, 좌석이 제한 되어있으므로 미리 회비를 내야 합니다. 회비는 세종문화회 웹사이트 (www.sejongculturalsociety.org) 를 통하여 지불하거나 세종문화회로 (Sejong Cultural Society, 606 Forest Road, Glenview, IL, 60025) 로 보내주시면 됩니다.

Our Twisted Hero
Plot
This story is told by a man named Han Byeong-tae (or Pyongt'ae), recalling his memories when he was in 5th grade.
Due to Byeong-tae's father failing in business, they move to a low town and go to Y Elementary School. There, he meets Eom Seokdae (or Om Sokdae), a president of the 5th grade and one who holds everything in his grade, more than his teacher. However, Eom Seokdae forces students with threats and violence to follow him. Byeong-tae fights Soekdae's reign and tries everything in his power to overthrow the bully. However, every single student in their class supports Soekdae. Therefore, everything goes wrong for him; his parents misunderstand him, his grades go down and his power ranking also goes down. Hence he loses, gives up, and gives up under Seokdae's power.
After, Seokdae treats him specially, granting him more power and allowing him to gain popularity. First, he restores Byeong-tae's fighting rank to even higher than before. Second, he makes everyone hang out with Byeong-tae so he is not alone. Byeong-tae also gets his grades back up. At this point, the narrator begins to have mixed feelings for Seokdae, ranging from gratitude to fear. "I was thankful to Seokdae. But when I think it back, those things were the things I had lost to Seokdae. He had just given it back."
But when Byeong-tae goes to 6th grade, Seokdae's power breaks, because the new teacher has sensed the strange distribution of power among the classmates. After Seokdae's cheating and bullying have been outed by the teacher, he leaves school and is never heard from again.
The story turns back to the present. Byeong-tae, now grown up, ends up seeing a familiar man getting dragged down by the police. As the man turns his face, Byeong-tae recognizes the distinctive features as Seokdae.
