‘Yeombul dodeuri’(Go around Buddha preaching), ‘Taryeong’(Ballad) in the suit music ‘Yongsanhoesang’ (Get together on Spiritual Mountain )

Yongsanhoesang is the ensemble music that Korean musicians most love. It appears first in the 1759 Taeak hubo as fifteenth century music.

Chamber music is a respectable form of recreation for gentlemen, not performed by hired musicians. Its main repertory, Yongsanhoesang was originally a Buddhist chant with the short text “Yongsan hoesang pulbosal” which means “great Buddha preaching on Yongsan Mountain.”Later, the song, dropping its text, became independent instrumental music.

It is a suite comprising nine pieces with variations: Sangnyeongsan, Jungnyeongsan, Seryeongsan, Garakdeori, Sanghyeondodeuri, Hahyeondodeuri, Yeombuldodeuri (goaround Buddha preaching), Taryeong(a kind of rhythm like a ballad), and Gunak. Either all nine pieces or one or a few pieces may be presented in a performance. The music starts with the slow-tempo Sangnyeongsan and gradually speeds up throughout the other pieces.
