Derek Chung |
Derek Chung (age 13) is a 7th grader at Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove, IL. He began piano lessons at age 6. He is currently studying with Sueanne Metz. Derek’s recent accomplishments include: 1st place winner in the junior II division at the Music Festival in Honor of Confucius; 2nd place at ISMTA junior division; 1st place winner in his division at the Los Angeles Young Musician International Competition and winner of the overall Best Romantic Performance award. Derek has received gold medals in the CAMTA and NSMTA Sonata Festivals; 1st place winner in the Roberta Savler Piano Competition, NSMTA Piano Competition and the Granquist Music Competition. He was a prize winner in the Sejong Music Competition and Society of American Musicians. He has given numerous public performances including honors recitals at Interlochen Performing Arts Camp and the Northbrook Public Library. Most recently, Derek performed in the Young Steinway Concert Series at the Skokie Public Library and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as part of the American Fine Arts Festival winners’ concert. He attended the International Institute of Young Artists (IIYM) summer academy and was chosen to perform in the IIYM honors recital. Outside of music, Derek runs cross country for Woodlawn Middle School. He also enjoys reading, basketball, and golf. |
