Eligibility Requirements Top

This competition is open to all pre-college students. 

 

Divisions Top

Categories:

Piano, Violin, Cello

Divisions:

  • (1) Senior division: Grade 9 through 12
  • (2) Junior division: 8th Grade and younger

    * Previous first-prize winners cannot compete in the same division in the same category in the following years.
    * Please note that the division is based on Grade rather than the age of the competitor.

 

Repertoire Requirements Top

Two pieces of music are required to be performed by each contestant.

I. Piano

  1. One solo piece of the competitors' choice from memory and without repeats AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music only for the required pieces.

    Senior division:

    1. Sung Joo Hong “Bell Flower”
    2. Eugene Cha “Chaos” based on Sae-Ta-Ryung
    3. Dae-Seong Kim “Changu-Nori”  

Junior division:

  1. Jean Ahn “ Nil-Lili” for solo piano
  2. Hyun Kyung Kim “Blue Bird"
  3. David Schober "Fugue after the Korean National Anthem"

II. Violin
  1. First or third movement from any concerto or one piece for violin with piano from memory without repeats. AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music (only for the required piece).

    Senior division

    1. Jeongkyu Park “Toad” for violin and piano
    2. Hyo Jong Kim “Picnic (Sopoong)”
    3. Keumok Huh “Sopum" based on a theme of "SangYoungSan”
    4. David Evan Jones “Eemulnori: Memory and Reflection”  

Junior division

  1. Rhee Haun “Dorajie”
  2. Dong-Ji Moon “Hae-Ga San Ma-loo-eh Ju-mool-uh-do”
  3. Keumok Heo “Fantasy” for Violin and Piano based on the Theme of "Sarang" by Nan-Pa Hong

III. Cello
  1. First or third movement from any concerto or one piece for cello with piano from memory without repeats. AND
  2. One of the following required pieces. Contestants may use music (only for the required piece).

    Senior division

    1. Soonmee Kahng "Petit Suite" for cello solo: #4, "Dal ah, dal ah"
    2. Charles Lee "Taken Away at Twelve. III. Return"
    3. Rob Collins "Jindo Arirang"

Junior division

  1. Geonyong Lee "Ong"

Competition Rules Top
  1. Music of competitor's choice must be performed from memory.
  2. Music may be used only for the piece from the required music repertoire.
  3. No transcriptions will be allowed.
  4. Questions concerning repertoire may be directed to sejong@sejongsociety.org
  5. Judges may not hear pieces in their entirety due to time constraints.
  6. The approximate performance time limit at the competition will be:
    • i. Senior division: 12 minutes
    • ii. Junior division: 8 minutes
  7. The decision of the judges will be final.
  8. Prizes may not be awarded at the judges’ discretion.
  9. The competition will not provide an accompanist but can recommend pianists upon request. The contestant is responsible for arranging rehearsals and paying expense for the accompanist.
  10. First prize winners cannot compete in the same division in the same category the following years.
  11. One clean copy of original music score and two clean copies must be provided for the judges. Contestants will not be allowed to compete if he/she fails to provide a clean original music score. Please number measures at the beginning of each line.
