Divisions Top

This competition is open to pre-college students residing in the U.S. 

Categories: Piano, Violin

Divisions:

  • Senior division: Grade 9 - 12
  • Junior division: Grade 8 and under   
Competition Rules Top
  1. Two pieces of music are required to be performed by each contestant.
  2. All music is to be performed from memory.
  3. No transcriptions will be allowed.
  4. Questions concerning repertoire may be directed to sejong_music@yahoo.com
  5. Judges may not hear pieces in their entirety due to time constraints.                          
  6. The approximate performance time limit at the competition will be;
                              i.     Senior division: 8 minutes
                            ii.     Junior division: 6  minutes
  7. The decision of the judges will be final.
  8. Prizes may not be awarded at the judges’ discretion. 
  9. The competition will not provide an accompanist but can recommend pianists upon request. The contestant is responsible for arranging rehearsal and pay expense for accompanist.
  10. The first prize winner cannot compete in the same division for the following years.
  11. One clean copy of original music score must be provided for the judge. No photocopies will be accepted. Contestant will not be allowed to compete if one fails to provide a clean original music score.

Repertoire Requirements Top

Two pieces of music are required to be performed by each contestant.

I. Piano

Senior division:

  • Etude for Children (Based on Korean Children’s Song) No.50 by Byung-Eun Yoo
  • One solo piece of own choice

 Junior division:

  • Etude for Children (Based on Korean Children’s Song) No.14 by Byung-Eun Yoo
  • One solo piece of own choice

II. Violin

Senior division

  • Arirang Fantasy for violin and piano by Soonmee Kahng or
    Sopum for violin and piano based on the theme of Sanyoungsan (see note) by Keumok Heo
    The contestant may play either "Arirang Fantasy" or "Sopum".
  • First or third movement from any concerto

 Junior division

  • Fantasy for Violin and Piano based on the Theme of Sarang by Nan-Pa Hong by Keumok Heo
  • First or third movement from any concerto or one piece for violin with piano

Note on "Sopum":
The violin senior division contestant may play either "Sopum" or "Arirang Fantasy".
Due to a short notice before the deadline for application submission, we will
fax "Sopum" to you free of charge if you wish to have a piece. Or you can pick
it up in person from the Korea Times Chicago office at The Korea Times of

  1. Application fee: $35

  3. Application must be typewritten or printed.
  4. Application must arrive at the office on or before October 15, 2004.
  5. Students will be notified of their performance time no later than October 29, 2004.

Prizes  Top

Senior division: 1st prize ($300), 2nd prize ($200), 3rd prize ($100)
Junior division: 1st prize ($150), 2nd prize ($100), 3rd prize ($50)

Winners will be invited to public performance opportunities & master class appearances

Winners Concert & Award Ceremony Top

All winners are required to perform at the Winners Concert
